Siphonic roof drainage is an engineered alternative to conventional gravity roof drainage that uses full-bore pipe flow and the available elevation difference between the roof and the point of discharge to convey stormwater. Proper application requires an understanding of fluid mechanics, system geometry, drain performance, rainfall criteria, pressure limitations, and hydraulic balance. ASPE/ANSI 45-2025 establishes the current U.S. consensus standard for the design, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of siphonic roof drainage systems.
This course provides engineers, architects, plumbing designers, and other building-design professionals with an introduction to the principles and practical application of siphonic roof drainage. Topics include the differences between conventional and siphonic systems; system priming and full-bore operation; the hydraulic relationships used in design; design rainfall and drain selection; disposable and residual head; hydraulic imbalance; velocity and pressure limitations; cavitation; pipework configuration; points of discharge; construction coordination; and verification of the installed system. The course also introduces current manufacturer-supported engineering design utilities used to perform the iterative hydraulic calculations required for siphonic system design. The emphasis is on understanding the engineering principles and design process necessary to evaluate and coordinate siphonic roof drainage systems rather than on training for any particular manufacturer's software platform.
